Priorities

The power of the people.

It is at the center of everything Al Turkos does.

Strong public schools

As a proud alum of Vermont public schools, Al knows Winooski’s schools are among the clearest expressions of our city’s values: diverse, welcoming, creative, and deeply connected to the community.

As Vermont debates education funding, governance, and redistricting, Al will fight to make sure Winooski’s voice is heard. Any statewide changes must protect what makes Winooski’s schools special, support students and families, and reflect the needs of Vermont’s most diverse community.

Al will be a strong partner to Winooski’s superintendent, school leaders, educators, families, and students as they work to protect and strengthen public education.

Affordable housing & Healthcare

Winooski can be a city where people can build a life, not just pass through. Al will work to make Winooski more stable, sustainable, and accessible for everyone.

That means championing more housing options for people at different stages of life and different income levels: renters, first-time homebuyers, seniors, young families, immigrant families, workers, and lifelong residents who want to stay in the community they love.

It means recognizing that health care is too expensive for too many Vermonters. As your representative in the State House, Al will support policies that lower costs, expand access to quality care, and ensure people can get the health care they need without being pushed into impossible financial choices.

And it means protecting access to affordable, safe, and legal reproductive health care in Vermont while reproductive freedom is under attack nationwide. Al has spent years working to expand access to abortion and contraception, and they will bring that experience to Montpelier to help keep Vermont a safe place for reproductive health care.

immigrant safety & belonging

Winooski is home to families from all over the world, and our state policies should reflect the strength, dignity, and needs of our immigrant communities.

As a neighbor, Al has shown up as a support person outside the house on Dorset St on March 11th, and voted to approve more city funding for the Winooski Language Access program. In the State House, Al will fight for stronger language access, more funding for translation and interpretation services, and expanded support for cultural and language liaisons who help families navigate schools, public services, and community life. And they will work to protect Vermonters from federal overreach, including holding ICE agents accountable when they violate people’s rights.

Every single one of our neighbors should be able to access information, participate in civic life, and live in our communities without fear.
